How are existing commemorations in urban spaces challenged and transformed? In this chapter, I examine two cases, one in Cape Town and one in Copenhagen, where statues, one ephemeral, the other more permanent, have been added to public spaces in the process of decolonisation and de-commemoration. The two cases, one in the formere Dutch and British colony of South Africa and one in the (former) colonial power of Denmark, are two of many examples where statues related to colonialism have been either removed, replaced, or accompanied by new statues in recent years to commemorate stories often left out of narratives of the colonial era.
