The impact of literary works on public debate and opinion largely depends on their capacity to arouse strong emotions in their audience. However, literary scholarship and criticism have too often neglected literature’s emotional power because affective responses to literature have been considered to be inferior to critical responses. The aim of the Literature and Emotions Conference is to reconsider the importance of literature’s emotional power by empirical investigation as well as by theoretical discussion.
