Questions about technology, about media, and about politics abound in contemporary cultural studies in multiple different guises. This of course reflects the momentous contemporary transformations within these three fields, and the profound effects on the organization of private experience and public matters that are entailed by such transformations. With this seminar, we will focus specifically on the theoretical articulation of the relationship between technology, media and politics, historically as well as in the present situation. This means that we will not only look at the theories and histories of technology, of media and of politics as separate fields of inquiry, but rather at some of the historical and epistemological conditions for gauging their interaction, as well as the ways in which contemporary cultural studies can develop analytical strategies on this basis. The seminar takes its point of departure in the work of Bernard Stiegler, who has prominently developed this line of research. Special text sessions will be devoted to discussions of his recent work, and professor Stiegler will attend the seminar and give a talk on Friday afternoon. In addition, we solicit short presentations (15 mn) from participants on topics relating to the overall theme of the seminar.
