The Danish branch of Architecture Sans Frontières organized a two-day interdisciplinary workshop in March 2013, focusing on the spatial dimensions of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. The village Lifta by Jerusalem was the starting point for a discussion that will be lead through proposals on alternative future scenarios for the place, in drawing, model and text. The workshop took place at the School of Architecture in Copenhagen, in collaboration with the Department of Human Settlements. Lifta has been left abandoned since the Arab-Israeli war in 1948, and is one of few Palestinian villages that were not destroyed or overtaken by Israelis. Recent plans to privatize the village and turn it into a residential neighbourhood for Israeli Jews, was postponed following protests from both Palestinian and Israeli organisations. The current debate on the future of Lifta evolves around the symbolic and cultural significance of space and architectural remnants, and the opposing definitions of cultural heritage and the right to place. Core questions are: - How does built space become political? - In what way can power of definition be instrumental in relation to space? - How is cultural heritage and identity used in the conflict between Palestine and Israel?
