Algorithms and Emerging Forms of Intimacy

This chapter sheds light on emerging forms of intimacies with contemporary algorithmic systems. These algorithmic intimacies (Wiehn, 2021, 2022), as I coin the concept, consist of technological, social and economic layers of meaning in light of the increasing impact of artificial intelligence. The notion of intimacy becomes a heuristic to think through the socio-political relations that lie at the heart of digital environments such as social media platforms or AI recognition systems. It is leveraged for the analysis of closely tethered relations in these digital environments, which often foster and/or prolong existing structures of dominance. The outsourcing of intimate chat labour on the platform OnlyFans is a case study that illustrates the layers of the conceptual framework. The aim of the chapter is to contribute to a recent turn in the study of algorithms that is deeply informed by cultural studies’ attention to relations of power. As I come to demonstrate, interdisciplinary forms of investigation are a meaningful approach to the formulation of critical perspectives on AI.
