My general area of research is popular music of the Western hemisphere since ca. 1800 drawing upon theories developed in popular music studies, music history and theory, cultural sociology, and aesthetics.
Because of my interest in the analysis of recorded sound the field of sound studies has influenced my research as well. This has led to studies on the relations between music and radio, especially in the interbellum years. This will be my focus in the next couple of years. Concrete projects include a study on the development of radio and music genres, a study on the national radio’s music repertoire in the 1920s and 1930s, a study on the social aspects of radio sound, and a study of music in transnational radio.
